Five Common Denominators Of Effective Diversity Programs
By Lauren Baier Kim
Although fostering diversity across parameters like race, sex and age has been a focus for U.S. companies for years, employees often view diversity programs skeptically. Only about a third of American employees say their companies' diversity programs are effective, according to a 2004 study by The National Urban League Inc. of 5,500 American workers conducted by online, phone, face-to-face and focus-group interviews.
"After decades of well-informed investment by businesses, it's clear we still have a long way to go," says Marc H. Morial, president and chief executive officer of The National Urban League, which is based in New York.
Corporate diversity experts say effective diversity programs have these five things in common.
1. A business case for diversity.
2. A focus on retention.
3. A customized approach.
4. Buy-in at the top.
5. A careful hiring process.
